7/1 Le Montagne
Be it the Alps or Apennines, there is something special about grapes grown in elevated conditions, known as “mountain fruit”. Along steep hillsides and terraced vineyards, soils become less fertile, climate more hostile and the art of viticulture more rigorous, leading to an incredible experience in the glass. This style of wine is a sommeliers best friend, cutting richness and elevating flavor without overwhelming a chef’s creation.
In this class, we explore 7 winemaking areas located along hillsides or mountain foothills. We will begin with a brief history of the mountain geography of Italy, highlighting climate and important soils, followed by a guided tasting of the wines. We will visit each wine in the glass, discussing aroma, structure and personality, and then reveal their origin and winemaker story.
Regions visited: Lombardia, Valle d’Aosta, Alto-Adige, Campania, Sicilia, Toscana and Veneto
