April '25 Newsletter
When sourcing wines for "the wine list", I am always in search of an active mind at work. Winemakers who are curious, resourceful and collaborative in their approach always make exciting and relevant wines, even in challenging vintages. I snapped this photo (above) of a large cask during a visit to Elio Sandri a few weeks back in the Monforte d'Alba of Barolo. Elio resides along the hillsides of southern Barolo in a historic area known as Perno. All of his casks looked like this, the scribbles of a restless mind forever searching for knowledge, balance and expression in his glass. Look closely and a little masterclass on the last 25 years of vintages can be deciphered.
The shop is buzzing with new arrivals, discounted offers and some really tasty wines. Lots of minds at work!
Arrivals
A red from the obscure Ruche grape of Piemonte showing peppercorns and savory spices... Vibrant and mouth-filling Kerner from the alpine slopes of the dolomites, like captured sunlight in the glass... Sangiovese from the birthplace of Mussolini without all the oppression, smooth and intensely spiced with a happy finish... One satisfying Barolo from a new-ish producer forging clean lines from old recipes... High-altitude Brunello from one of its luminaries, perhaps the best i've tasted from much sought-after vines of Montosoli...
Discovery Packs
Ready for a little education in the glass? The following 2-packs showcase: the Volcanic soils of Mount Etna, stylistic differences between the communes of Barbaresco and a meditation on Barolo consumed in its youth. Each have been discounted and come with individual cards discussing the producer story, notes on winemaking and service instructions. Take it from there!
