5/20 Uva Italiana

5/20 Uva Italiana

One thing is for sure, Italy has a ton of grapes! This is perhaps the most common sentiment when confronted by Italian wine lists in restaurants and retail shops. Not all are indigenous, yet the vast majority have been living on Italian soil for so long they are considered native. Find a good one and your world expands, for Italian wine grapes almost always reflect their area of production. Look closer and discover a proprietary cheese, shape of pasta and local dish seem to pair perfectly. The more I visit the less I make plans in advance, ready to stumble across a new grape and follow the ensuing rabbit hole into a new village or commune.

In this educational tasting experience, join sommelier Paul Robinson down the rabbit hole to learn about 8 distinct grapes from across Italy. We will approach each grape in the glass first, making for a fun round-table investigation into aroma, flavor and structure, followed by a discussion about place. I will present the grape’s origin story and lay out the conditions necessary for growth. Attendees will taste a broad range, from benchmark to oddball, as we examine, savor and discover some of Italy’s most exciting native grapes!
