WINECLASS: Spanish North

  • Farmstead Wine/Cheese 6218 La Salle Avenue Oakland, CA, 94611 United States (map)

The Spanish North

Covering much of the Iberian Peninsula, from the French Pyrenees to the Andalucian coast, Spain is a country chock full of intense and expressive wines. Dominated by the “Meseta” or central plateau, Spain is perpetually under vine (most acreage in the world) and always striving to be better. In this class, we focus exclusively on the northerly appellations, stretching from the Atlantic, to Basque country and into the Mediterranean. We will cover the aromatic whites of Galacia and Txakoli, the bright reds of Bierzo and Ribera del Duero, and the structured wines of Rioja and Priorat. Participants will gain an understanding of the major regions, grapes and wine production methodology which sets Spain apart in the world of wine. Join me for a closer look into these remarkable appellations.

Sommelier Instructor

Paul Robinson has been in the hospitality business for almost 20 years. His career began in the private event business in NYC, working for a French fashion photography house and the acclaimed restauranteur Danny Meyer. After a meaningful trip to Italy, Paul pursued certification as a sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers. He then moved into restaurants full-time, first by leading a wine/cheese program at Chiaroscuro in SF, then at 2 Michelin star Del Posto in NYC. After restaurants, a chance encounter would lead Paul to a new career: immersive educational tastings on regions and appellations all over the world. He has spent the last 3 years running Bottivino, a retail and events business devoted to Italian wine. Paul is a certified sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers and a member of the ruling council of the Cavalieri del Tartufo e Dei Vini di Alba - SF Bay Area chapter.
