Barolo Fresca

Barolo Fresca

After a recent trip to Barolo, I am reminded how special these wines really are. Not many can boast such impressive range from a single temperamental grape, grown across 11 communes only a few miles apart. One of the most pleasurable experiences is to drink these wines in their youth, a practice uncommon in the old days when they were meant to rest for years, decades even, before entering an elusive "drinking window". Today, the landscape has changed and there are wonderful Barolo experiences to be had after a few years in the bottle. Even devoted traditionalists, who follow the recipe of long macerations and aging in large cask, are producing wines of finesse near release. Contrast this with the modernists, Burgundy-inspired enthusiasts who employ shorter macerations and aging in small toasted barrels called barrique. Presenting two producers, one modern the other traditionalist, who personify each approach beautifully.
