Etna

Etna

There is something special about the terroir of Etna, home to Europe's most temperamental stratovolcano. Evolving over time by frequent eruptions, the terroir of Etna supports old bush-vines called 'albarello', located to the north, east and south-facing slopes. Native grapes Nerello Mascalese, Etna's captain, Carricante and Nerello Cappuccio thrive on soils forged from expelled ash, lava, pumice, and steam. When considering the wines of Mount Etna, such factors as altitude, exposure, wind, sunshine and the volcano itself  all shape the experience in the glass. A common thread? Profound aromatics and a savory, almost mineral-like character on the palate. The best producers balance this effect with silky fruit over a tight-knit frame of tannin and refreshing acidity. Two who deftly capture these traits are Giulia and Benedetto from Monteleone and Giuseppe Russo of Girolamu Russo. I am proud to present them together in the 2-pack exploring the wines of Etna.
