Balgera 2017 Valtellina Superiore “Valgella” Lombardia

Alpine Nebbiolo from Lombardia, Balgera makes fragrant and layered wines that age gracefully. This 2017 has a juicy mouthfeel with hints of rosemary and sage spices on then nose. Give this red a chill and its suddenly feels more polished in the glass.

I’ve been a longtime fan of Balgera, among the oldest houses in the area. Nebbiolo is called Chiavennasca up here and showcases a leaner profile with “wilder” aromas of blue fruit, forest floor and sweet spices. What sets Balgera apart is their dedication to extended aging in cask, releasing product onto the market when they are ready to drink. The 2017 has a softer feel due to the overall warmth of the vintage.
