Barbaresco

Sunshine always reminds me of lazy afternoons spent in Barbaresco, where local wildflowers seem to imbue their essence onto grapes, giving these delicate wines lift. Similar to Barolo, Nebbiolo from Barbaresco take on the traits of soil, location and winemaker. Barbaresco comes from 3 areas named after their townships: Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso. One way of deepening an understanding, is to contrast wines from different locations yet similar production methods: Here, we have newcomer Francesco Versio from the rolling hills of Neive, contrasted with Ca del Baio, a benchmark family from historic vines in Barbaresco proper. One shows a more expansive palate with pronounced spice and sinuous tannins. The other is vertically-inclined, with bright fruit, firm structure and lively acidity.
