Barbera is one of my favorite grapes. Its kind of an underdog in Piemonte, often relegated to the everyday glass. Over the years, i've experienced producers who elevate Barbera to grand cru status. Liugi Oddero and Braida are two such producers. Oddero's is refined and elegant while Braida contrasts with darker fruit and bolder expression.
Luigi Oddero 2020 Barbera d’Alba Superiore
A smooth yet muscular Barbera from one of Barolo’s great families. They play a finesse game in the glass, with long sinuous tannins, restrained maraschino cherry red fruit and balanced acidity. A recent hit in a recent wine class! The soft expression of La Morra fruit really shines through.
Braida 2021 Barbera d’Asti “Montebruna” Piemonte
Montebruna is among Asti’s finest expressions of Barbera, deftly balancing the spice, acidity and punchy fruit this grape is known for. The Montebruna ‘21 is bold showing dark skinned fruit layed with baking spices and good backbone from extended aging in big casks.
