Continuing my love affair with 2020 Barolo, Bovio’s ‘Gattera’ is a perfect blending of producer and place. Bovio’s light maceration and use of different aging vessels allows for Gattera’s spiciness and richness to shine bright in the glass. There is a rumbling core of red fruit beneath the surface, emerging after an hour in the decanter. Excellent showing for Gattera! Gianfranco Bovio is one of Barolo’s benchmark producers. The family farms 8 hectar spread across the communes of La Morra and Castiglione Falletto. They make graceful wines of restraint and site specificity, anchored by a lighter take to the traditional method of winemaking in Barolo.
