Ciavolich 2020 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo ‘Divus’ Abruzzo
Ciavolich 2020 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo ‘Divus’ Abruzzo
From the oldest vines on the estate in Loreto Aprunito, Ciavolich Montepulciano Divus shows the deeper, more textured side to Montepulciano. Divus is aged in different formats of barrel, giving this wine a layered mouthfeel to match Montepulciano’s robust dark fruit. While not as big as others in its class, the Divus shows what a little restraint in the vineyard will give you. Ciavolich has a storied history in Abruzzo dating back to 1560, with winemaking beginning in the mid 1800’s. During this time, they built a famous subterranean wine cellar in the province of Chieti, which stands today as an example of Abruzzo’s winemaking past. In the 1960’s, the family inherited a 50 hectar estate in Pescara called Loreto Aprutino and began to produce wine for themselves. Chiara and Gianluca are the current generation of winemakers, and they follow sustainable winemaking practices in the vineyard and cellar. Today, they own 2 estates covering 50 hectar across Pescara, focusing on Montepulciano, Trebbiano and Cococciola grapes.
