Giovanni Almondo 2024 Roero Arneis ‘Vigne Sparse’ Piemonte

Giovanni Almondo 2024 Roero Arneis ‘Vigne Sparse’ Piemonte

Almondo’s Vigne Sparse is a fresh and focused expression of Arneis from Monta sub-region in the Roero. It has Chablis-like expression no doubt from the fossilized marine soils the two regions share. The ‘Sparse’ shows tart citrus and orchard fruit like underripe bosc pear, and a hint of acacia on the nose. An excellent aperitivo, oyster or glass for sunny afternoons. The Almondo family has been living in the Roero since the 14th century, with winemaking beginning in earnest around 1980. Patriarch Domenico Almondo with sons Federico & Stefano focus on pure varietal wines of pronounced aroma and complexity. The flagship, the ‘Bricco di Ciliegie’ comes from a section of vines cresting a hill called Vittori, endowed with a high level of limestone deposit. However, when I am looking for everyday excellence, the Vigne Sparse fits the bill perfectly.
