Sergio Mottura 2023 Grechetto ‘Poggio della Costa’ Lazio

Sergio Mottura 2023 Grechetto ‘Poggio della Costa’ Lazio

The Poggio della Costa is a single vineyard grown at 120m and facing east, ready to soak up the morning sun in northeastern Lazio. Sergio ferments his Grechetto in steel and ages lightly on the fine sediment (lees), adding a little weight and complexity to this refreshing and focused white. The Mottura family moved from Piemonte to Civitella d’Agliano in eastern Lazio in the 1930’s to become grape growers. In the years that followed, Orvieto, where Civitella in located, skyrocketed in quality and volume and the Mottura’s are among the areas most prolific. They work organically in the vineyard, a move that returned biodiversity to the area as well as the local porcupine (adorning the labels). Sergio converted the winery into an estate-bottling operation and focused on the helping to revitalize indigenous grapes of this area (Procanico, Verdello, Grechetto and Drupeggio). His wines are clear expressions of place, showcasing the steep vineyards of tufa and volcanic terroir.
