Shop Arrivals
The latest drop at the shop brings aromatic whites and reds of typicity from the regions of Lombardia, Piemonte and Campania.
We begin in Lombardia with Marangona is a small winery I first encountered at a vertical tasting a few weeks back. This wine really showcases how taunt, dry and expressive Italian whites can be while still delivering complex aromas. I experienced petrol, white pepper and sun-beaten rock minerality, woah! Check out the article I wrote about the tasting. It was Marangona who inspired my recent Vini Bianchi class.
My educational program has delved into the Langhe (Piemonte) as of late, so it was easy pleasure to bring in the king of Asti-Monferratto, Braida. They are known for cru level Barbera, yet it is this obscure little white I am currently loving. The 'La Regina' is a slightly fuller, more herbal expression of this unique varietal, for lovers of balanced Chardonnay without the butter.
For the reds, we begin with the historic producer Cantina del Pino, home to the architect of Barbaresco in the late 1800's. The 2021 Barbaresco is a bold vintage with intense dried roses and expressive tannins which resolve after some time in the decanter. Our next red takes us to a dormant volcano in western Campania near the Bay of Naples called Rocchmonfina. Cacciagalli is a little cult winery that makes blends from these old soils. The Mille is a blend of Piedirosso, Aglianico and rare and rustic Palagrello Nero. It is juicy and approachable with lovely layers of spice.
