Ferragosto

Ferragosto

This season invites us to enjoy wines that complement warm evenings and sunny weekends. Figs, apples, stone fruits, tomatoes, and squash are at their peak. Labor Day is fast approaching (9/1) and the Italian festival Ferragosto (8/15) is on our doorstep. Inspired by emperor Augustus (63BC - 14AD) and his acknowledgment of labor - and likely himself - Italians celebrate Ferragosto practically all month with BBQ and easy drinking wines.

Try complex Vermouth made from Istine, both yummy and subtle, requiring only a splash of tonic and citrus. Low ABV Lambrusco from Paltrinieri tastes just like fresh strawberries lifted with bubbles, a perfect mid-afternoon libation. My favorite rosé's? Aromatic Ciro Rosato from Calabretta and juicy Cerasuolo from Ciavolich! The reds showcase intoxicating aromas contrasted by smooth and easy-drinking expression: Niklas chill-able Schiava, savory Gaglioppo from Vumbaca and approachable Cabernet Franc from Damiano Ciolli

Salute!
